You may have heard as a general guideline that you should set up “eyes under the bar”. Although this is a good starting point for the average person, a lot of times it leaves someone too far away from the bar.

Instead don’t be afraid to let your head hang off the bench a little. The most important thing is that you aren’t traveling a large distance to get the bar into position

You want to shorten the distance traveled on the take out. This will ensure tightness isn’t lost and you won’t lose your positioning. This may put your eyes under the bar and it might not, everybody is different.

Pay attention to how far you’re traveling with the bar next time you bench. If it feels like you’re traveling a foot out with the bar, back your body up a bit!
